Welcome

 The Nottingham Society of Engineers

The President’s Message

Welcome to our society, whether you are a new or existing member, a guest, student or general surfer. I, Eugene Davern, am the Society’s President until September 2009 and the President-elect is Terry Phipps.

Membership is open to all engineers and those interested in engineering. We are a multi-disciplinary forum within which to exchange ideas, understand each others problems and how they are resolved. We wish to spread knowledge of engineering achievements, encourage research and development and promote the advancement of Engineering and the Engineering Profession.

We encompass engineers of all ages and encourage children to enter the profession by sponsoring prizes for a local technology school and also the Energy Learning Centre. Individual members are NVQ assessors and assess technicians and chartered engineering professionals.

Our support of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) or Lifelong Learning is total and our society is the ideal way of meeting the requirements of your institution in the convivial surroundings of the Nottingham Squash Club where we hold our winter lectures or the host venue in the summer, all for a very reasonable sum of money.

Guests are always welcome to come either with members or on their own and hopefully be encouraged to join the society, just let us know you are coming so we can accommodate everybody.

Although we have been around since 1897 we try to keep ourselves up to date with the vast array of engineering topics and associated science, especially that relating to Nottingham.

Our winter lectures and events start in October each year, having about two a month until March, when we switch over to summer visits to such places such as construction sites, aircraft factories, power stations and furnaces.  A highlight of the year is the annual dinner in November, where much social and business networking takes place. Our previous lectures have covered such subjects such items as global warming, wind energy, MRI scanners, Aircraft telephony and Motorway Design and Construction.

This winter our lecture topics cover items such as Electromagnetic Transmission Line Modelling, Radio Frequency Identification and Walking the Great Wall of China, fuller details are given by clicking on the relevant link.

So why become a member of our society? You may need a contact in a company you wish to approach, you will updated on a wide variety of subjects, you get to know a wider engineering community than you might otherwise do so, you may need help with a job search, you encourage others to join the profession and many other reasons too numerous to list and it is all very social. I hope to see you all the Squash Club soon and before you ask, no I do not play, just watch.
