Summer Visit Programme for 2010
Visit No 1
The Holocaust Centre, Laxton, Nottinghamshire (Commencing 12.30 pm Monday 26th April 2010. The maximum party is 20.)
The visit will include a speaker whose talk will start at 12.45 pm and finish at 2.15 pm, after which you will be able to look around the two exhibitions, which will take a further 1 to 1.5 hours. The entrance fee is £7.00.
Visit No 2
Engineering Project Awards, The National School, Annesley Road, Hucknall, NG16 7DB (Commencing 7.00 pm Monday 10th May 2010).
School finalists present their projects, with the emphasis on presentation technique and an understanding of the technology.
The projects will be displayed on the walls. All entrants receive a certificate and the winner will be presented with a trophy. Refreshments will be served at 7 pm.
Visit No 3
East Midlands Trains, Etches Park Workshops, Derby. (Commencing 7.00pm Monday 24th May 2010. The maximum party is 17 and it is necessary to wear a stout pair of shoes.).
This is a follow up to the presentation given to the Society during the winter lecture period.
The visit to the workshops in Derby will be to see the inspection of trains after their daily use and the preparations for operation the following day. The party will also see the maintenance facilities where repairs are carried out together with the refuelling and cleaning areas.
Visit No. 4
Coventry Transport Museum, Millennium Place, Hales Street, Coventry CV1 1PN (Commencing 10:00 am Monday 7th June 2010. The maximum party is 15).
The museum displays the largest collection of British road transport, which includes 240 cars, commercial vehicles and buses, 100 motor cycles and 200 cycles. Entry is free and a nearby public car park costs £2.38 for 3 hours.
Mid-day lunch is available in the Museum or Coventry Cathedral restaurants.
After lunch a visit to the Cathedral is proposed, starting at 2.30 pm.
This new Cathedral (designed by Sir Basil Pence) was built after the war adjacent the remains of the old Cathedral bombed during the Second World War. Inside the building, hung above the high alter is a large Tapestry of Christ designed by Graham Sutherland.
There is a charge of £4.50 to enter the Cathedral and parking is available in a local public car park, which is also chargeable.
Visit No 5
Foxton Locks (commencing 2.00 pm Monday 28th June 2010)
Here you will see narrow boats ascending, and witness their crews operating the lock gates. Visit the museum and find the fascinating history of the staircase of 10 locks.
There is a proposal to rebuild the boat lift. However, the existing system, although not working, is there to see.
The cost of visiting the museum is £2.50 (concession £2.00). A car park is available.
Visit No 6
Society’s Garden Party, Trustee Richard and Marjorie Potter’s house, Ashdale, Nottingham Road, Burton Joyce, NG14 5AQ. (Commencing at 3.00 pm Saturday 3rd July 2010).
All members are cordially invited to enjoy an afternoon’s refreshment in the extremely pleasant surroundings of Richard and Marjorie Potter’s garden, at Burton Joyce. This will be shared with our sister society Nottingham Industrial Heritage Association.
Visit No. 7
Jersey Electric/CIEG
(Depart Monday 6th September 2010 and return Friday 10th September 2010)

A visit has been arranged to Jersey Electric/CIEG for members and a tour of the island’s attractions has been arranged for the ladies.
- Wednesday 8th September 2010
There will be a tour of the Durrel Wild Life Park and the German Underground Hospital and War Tunnels.
- Thursday 9th September 2010
The morning is free and in the afternoon it will be the Jersey Battle of Britain show. In the evening there will be a ‘farewell dinner’ at the Cristina Hotel.
In addition to the summer visits the Society will also host a Skittles Competition at the Royal Oak, Car Colston. (Commencing 7.00 pm Friday 18th June 2010).
Ten Nottingham Society of Engineers members will be competing with Newark Engineering Society members and ex members of the Derby Society of Engineers for the championship. A break will be held for a buffet at £9.00 per head.
