The Nottingham Society of Engineers
The President’s Message
Whether you are an existing member, guest, student or prospective new member I look forward to welcoming you to our lectures and summer visits.
Membership is open to all disciplines of Engineers and those interested in Engineering and Science. Our aim is to encourage exchange of ideas, spread knowledge of engineering and scientific achievements, encourage research and development and generally promote engineering and the engineering profession.
Over the years we have encouraged youngsters to enter the profession and have supported a local Technical School by judging projects and sponsoring prizes. We have also been involved with The Energy Leaning Centre and the ATC Hucknall.
Our winter lecture programme is, like our summer visits, open to guests as well as members. We do however request guests to let us know they will be attending in order to accommodate everyone. Winter lectures commence in October and continue through until the end of March with summer visits commencing in April. Our Annual Dinner is held in November and a Garden Party is usually held in July. These events give an opportunity to socialise with other members and guests.
Previous evening lectures have encompassed Nottingham Express Transit and Preparing for Climate Change. Lunchtime lectures have covered walks in the Sahara Desert, The Great Wall of China and Air Traffic Control. These lectures attract members and their partners and are followed by lunch.
Summer visits have included the Millau Bridge and Airbus Assembly Plant in Toulouse, Peterborough Power Station, Rolls Royce Museum in Derby, Triumph Motor Cycles and the Space Centre at Leicester.
It is my intention to continue with the high quality and standard achieved in the past lectures and visits. However, I would like to hear your suggestions for future lectures and visits in order to cover the interests of all members.
Lectures for our 2010 session will include East Midlands Trains, East Midlands Airport, Composite Materials and their use, and The Channel Islands Electricity Grid.
I personally look forward to the challenge ahead which I believe with your help and support will see our Society continue and hopefully grow in numbers and strength.
